BOOK REVIEW: THE NOBLE THRONE by Yessi Smith and Logan Keys

I meant to have this review up a while ago, since I was lucky enough to snag an ARC of it, but life conspired against me (as is so often the case) and alas, I can only get it to you now. But a review! Woo! First review of 2018!

I’ll be completely upfront and say that I’m generally a little iffy on shifter books. (I’m not sure I actually knew this was properly a shifter book until after I got the ARC.) As has always been my lot, I’m willing to give anything a few fair shots, just because the genres are so varied that it’s not fair to judge them all off of only one or two books. I’d seen a lot of good things about Logan Keys, one of the co-authors, and so I figured this was a safe one to start with.

Been a while, hasn’t it?

Man, the end (or you know, the totality) of 2017 was a bit of a nightmare. I’ve completely fallen off the horse in a lot of ways, both online and offline. And as is so commonly the case, I’m going to try and take the start of 2018 to rebook myself. So here’s what’s been going on, and what I’m hoping to do in the future.

BOOK(S) REVIEW: BY VOW AND ROYAL BLOODSHED and ON WINGS OF BONE AND GLASS by M.C.A. Hogarth

TAG TEAM ATTACK! Books two and three in the Blood Ladders trilogy I’m tossing into one review, not because I don’t think they’re worth their own, but because I read them in such close proximity to one another, my mind is having trouble keeping track of what happens when. As such, I’d rather just summarize here, because as you all know, if left to my own devices, I’ll talk for days about MCAH and her writing, and…well, I’m more than happy to, but perhaps you aren’t. So without any spoilers (which will already cut a chunk out) here’s what my thoughts are. (However, if you haven’t read book one, I don’t recommend reading this, unless the potential for spoilers in THAT book doesn’t bother you. JUST AS A WARNING.)

BOOK REVIEW: MIRRORED HEARTS by Emily Sheppard

I received a copy of this story through NetGalley in exchange for my honest review.

I had absolutely no idea of what to expect when confronted with this story. It sounded interesting, so I requested it and it found its way to my Kindle. The description gives away very little (including not telling me something that I would have enjoyed knowing going in) but I’m usually up for an adventure.

And…well, this was certainly an adventure of some sort. THERE ARE POTENTIAL SPOILERS (so to speak) BENEATH THE CUT. BE FOREWARNED. (tl;dr rating: *** – Worth a Look)

RIP

So I meant to have a post up for you yesterday. I was going to write it when I got home. But about halfway through my day, I got news that one of my dear friends from college had lost his mom to cancer on the 4th.

I’m still a little shaken, if I’m honest. She was an amazing woman, and I’ve left a lot of promises to her unanswered…and now I can never fulfill them.

You’ll have a book review post tomorrow, and with luck, I’ll have a fiction post for Friday. But I wanted to explain why I was gone. (Last Friday I was on the road and thought I had a post up. Whoops.)

I miss you, Diane. I’ll make sure to cheer extra loud down here for Mike.

BOOK REVIEW: THE SCATTERED AND THE DEAD by L.T. Vargus and Tim McBain

I’ve been on the mailing list for this pair for a while now (I honestly don’t remember where I found them any more, or when) and I’m sure this book has been on my Kindle for just as long. I’m always up for a good look into post-apocalyptic nightmares, zombies, you know, whatever the end of the world brings. Everyone has their own view and it’s absolutely fascinating. So this seemed to be right up my alley. If nothing else, I always like to give any author the benefit of the doubt for a book, if I’ve ended up on their mailing list and they haven’t irritated me too much during whatever emails I’ve received. (It’s happened, y’all. But that’s a post for another day.)

This started out with so much promise.

So About That Reading Challenge…

So I’ve found a bunch of lists that have Ideas For Blog Posts (for us people who can’t come up with enough things to talk about) and I was going back through my old posts to make sure I didn’t repeat any topics–or at least if I did, they were topics I hadn’t talked about in a while. It was there that I came across my post from earlier this year, talking about not making excuses about not having enough time, and how sure I was that I was going to reach my Goodreads goal of 75 books this year.

So I looked at my Goodreads challenge list, and as of today I’ve read thirty-five books, and am considered 14 books behind. …oops?

FICTION FRIDAY: Thimbleful Thursday – Actions Speak Louder Than Words

As I’ve been working on QUEST TO KARANTIRI more in preparation for my Patreon, as soon as I saw this topic, I knew that I needed to write to it. It doesn’t matter that it was from the beginning of the month. I WANT IT NOW.

In any event, this is Tarenthal and Carinth, after seeing Celita off. I overshot the word minimum by about 100. (Go figure.) As always, thank you Lyn for the awesome website!

BOOK REVIEW: AN HEIR TO THORNS AND STEEL by M.C.A. Hogarth

Guess what! Just what you’ve all been waiting for! ANOTHER MCAH REVIEW no but seriously, I’ve gotten a new trilogy of hers, and she’s got a big promo for one of them right around now, and THIS IS THE TIME TO BE TALKING ABOUT MICAH. *coughs* Just saying.

In any event, if you’ve been on the blog for any length of time, you’ll know that M.C.A. Hogarth is one of my all-time favorite authors. I’ve always up to read and review her work, and it’s been a while since I delved into anything. (Mea culpa, mea culpa.) Having spent as much time in her Pelted universe, stepping outside of it–no matter how sure I am of her talent–is a little unnerving. The Blood Ladders trilogy is definitely not the Peltedverse, and AN HEIR TO THORNS AND STEEL is book one of Morgan Locke’s adventure into worlds he truly never believed to be completely real.

Fifty Shades of Love (no seriously)

(BEAR WITH ME ON THE TITLE. I PROMISE IT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH WHAT IT’S PARODYING. …ACTUALLY IT’S THE EXACT OPPOSITE. PLEASE FORGIVE ME)

Hah. Remember when I said I was going to get back into this? Yeahhhhhhhh I did really well with that. But hey! I’m trying? Points for effort?

I feel like I had a topic I wanted to talk about here, but now I can’t remember what it was, so I’m going to talk about something. (This summarizes most of my life, honestly. As my grandmother would always say, “If you’ve forgotten what you were going to say, it was probably a lie.”

Can’t tell where my sense of humor comes from, can ya?

In any event. I’ve been reading (guess. Go ahead. Guess.) a M.C.A. Hogarth trilogy (bet you never would have guessed) and something has come to my attention that I’ve seen a lot in real life, but never had a good way to talk about it in terms of literature, but Micah has provided several characters that I can use to discuss this. So let’s just jump into it.

Non-romantic and/or non-sexual physical contact.
