Getting to Know You

So much like large quantities of the rest of the gaming world, I’ve gotten myself sucked into Persona 5. Being a huge fan of P4, and at least passingly familiar with P3, it stands to reason that I’d be right on top of this when it came out. Truth be told, I didn’t do any research into the game at all. I didn’t focus on it, I didn’t know anything about it, I had no initial intention of buying it.

Why, I can’t really say. It could be a number of reasons. My guess (because I really don’t know) is that it’s the same reason why it takes me so long to grow accustomed to new Doctors on Doctor Who. I don’t like change. These are the characters I know and love, and trying to get to know new characters is hard.

(I don’t know how I survive as a writer. I truly don’t.)

One Year Ago Today

There is a blessing and a curse when it comes to apps and programs like Timehop. I am often reminded, when it sends me back far enough, about times I had with people I no longer speak to…am not friends with anymore. It’s hard, seeing those names. Remembering that there were good times mixed with the bad, and missing those times.

But today isn’t a day like that. Today is a much happier memory day, and one that more directly ties into this here blog.

Today is the one-year anniversary of when I began my journey as a BookTuber.

What You See and What You Get

I’m not positive, but I feel like I’ve probably mentioned the video game UNDERTALE on this blog before. (Almost put “channel.” Can you tell I’m on YouTube too much?) It’s an amazing game with some of the best cause-and-effect mechanics I’ve ever seen in a video game. But more than that, I’ve always been impressed with their character development. The characters have depth, they change, they grow. And in at least two occasions, we meet characters who turn out to be very different indeed from who we thought they were the first time.

I adore characters who defy expectations. These two do it perfectly.

(If you couldn’t have guessed, there are MAJOR Undertale spoilers beneath the cut, for both the Pacifist and No Mercy/”Genocide” ending. You have been warned.)

Nothing is Forever

I think everyone knows, whether it be in real life or in a book, that one couple you think is completely unshakable. They’ve been through hell and back, and they still seem made for each other. It’s Buttercup and Westley’s story: “This is true love – you think this happens every day?” It’s what Romeo and Juliet thought their relationship was. (Thought is still the operative word, but…) It’s the happily ever after you dream of, and have to marvel when you see it in reality.

Maybe that relationship has even inspired some of your own writing. After all, how could you not? It’s what we’ve all hoped, it’s the dream. Your characters will be just as happy and forever as your friends, or those others written down by the rest of the world.

But nothing is forever.

On Reading and Reviewing Books

I know, I know. This isn’t a book review like I’ve promised. The honest fact of the matter is that I haven’t gotten through a book in time for today. (Okay, that’s not entirely true, but the book I did read recently is an ARC and the review doesn’t go up for a while now. Oops.) So I figured I’d talk a little about what I’ve realized about reading and reviewing since the beginning of the year.

The Trouble with Diversity

I’ve been following along with some of the snafus that have occurred in and around the #WeNeedDiverseBooks hashtag, though haven’t ever really delved deeply into them. I have several friends who write stories dealing with people of various diversities (racial, people with disabilities, LGBT+, etc) and I know it’s an important part of our world that we should strive to make more noticeable.

The trouble I have comes when we start talking about who should be writing what.

Strange and Mysterious Happenings

So I took to Twitter the other day and asked all you lovely luminaries out there what you were interested in hearing me talk about here on the blog. My dear friend Sky said “strange and mysterious that you’ve seen happen.” For a long time, I sat staring at my screen, wondering what strange and mysterious things I’ve seen happen, or had happen to me.

I think I’ve come up with 4 events now, in groups of 2.

Working Through the Lies or With Them?

This is a very important topic to me, and one that still touches very close to home as I still struggle with it. I apologize in advance if my train of thought jumps around a little or I seem a little disconnected. I have a lot of thoughts about this and I’m not sure how to approach all of them. So here we go!

(I’ll say now, there’s a bit of a content warning for depression under the cut. Just in case.)

They Say to Write What You Know

I’m generally of the mind to take the phrase “write what you know” with a grain of salt. I’m a fantasy writer, even if the “fantasy” means the daydreams of a high school kid. But with several of my jobs, I’ve spent more than a few days saying “oh god, if I wrote a book about what happens here…”

As you may have noticed, I’ve started doing this with the cafĂ© I work with.

Curse of the Third Book

(Man, that sounds like an awesome short story or something. Anyway.)

I seem to have a curse laid upon me when it comes to obtaining books. I seem to have brought it upon myself, way back in high school, unknowingly. It began with an author I have come to love dearly, and am glad of having become aware of, but…well, let me tell you the tale.
